CELLO TRAVEL TIPS:

  1. Bicycle Touring Gear Suggestions

    • Keep things simple by packing all of your travel gear in your BOB Dry SAK. Once you are at a travel center, and your bicycle is loaded inside of your CELLO, you will have only your Dry SAK and CELLO to handle.
    • Attach a shoulder strap to your Dry SAK. This will allow you to carry the Dry SAK over your shoulder and still have two hands free to roll the CELLO through travel centers.
    • Pack extra gear that won’t fit in the Dry SAK inside the CELLO. Make sure that the gear is strapped securely inside the CELLO to prevent it from coming out at the opening below the trailer fork.
    • If you choose to bring a bicycle rack and panniers for extra gear that won’t fit in your trailer, you can usually fit these items inside of the CELLO. Make sure that all extra gear inside of the CELLO is strapped securely in place.

  2. Checking the CELLO on Planes, Trains, and Buses

    • Call ahead to find out about luggage policies such as how much and what size is allowed and policies for checking bicycles and/or oversized luggage.
    • Get the first and last names of the agent quoting the luggage policies as these policies are sometimes inconsistent.
    • Show security agents that they can see the contents of the CELLO by turning it over. This may be sufficient for there inspection rather than removing the top-cover.
    • When loading and unloading the CELLO in a travel center, find a quiet area out of the way of traffic. It is convenient if you can find a bench to set your gear against.

  3. Storing the CELLO

    • Ride your bicycle with the CELLO on your BOB trailer to the location you will be storing it, before removing and packing it in the parts bag.
    • Make arrangements to store your CELLO with hotels, hostels, bike shops, or friends close to your arrival and departure locations, or locate lockers at travel centers.

  4. Shipping the CELLO

    • During a trip you may want to remove the CELLO from your trailer and ship it ahead to yourself.
    • Locate U.P.S., FedEx, or other shipping services close to your arrival and departure locations.
    • Ride your bicycle with the CELLO on your BOB trailer from your arrival location to a shipping center at the start of your tour.
    • Pick up the CELLO at a shipping center at the end of your tour.
    • Ride to the travel center you are departing from, and ship your bicycle inside of the CELLO.

  5. Transporting the CELLO with a Car

    a. Transporting the CELLO on a Bicycle Roof Rack
    (1) Roof racks with a mount for the front fork of a bicycle are often suitable for carrying the CELLO. The wheel dropouts of the BOB trailer fit into the front fork mounts of roof racks. This is how the CELLO is secured on the roof rack.
    (2) Before loading the CELLO onto the roof rack, remove the top-cover and fold up and secure the side-panels.
Please Note: Do not load a CELLO onto the roof rack of an automobile with the top-cover installed. When the top-cover is on, the CELLO can act as a parachute capturing air and causing the possibility of it coming loose from the roof rack.
    (3) The wheel dropouts of the BOB trailer are slotted horizontally backwards. Because of this, position the trailer fork mounts of the roof rack towards the rear end of the roof rack.
Please Note: Do not load a CELLO onto a roof rack with the fork mounts positioned on the front end of the roof rack. Positioning the front fork mount on the rear end of the roof rack insures that the wheel dropouts will not slide back out of position.
    (4) Pick up the CELLO, and position it on the roof rack.
    (5) Push the wheel dropouts of the BOB trailer back over the front fork mount.
    (6) Tighten the QR skewer of the roof rack onto the wheel dropouts, securing the BOB trailer and CELLO in place.
    (7) Secure the front of the CELLO down by strapping or tying the BOB trailer fork to the front bar of the roof rack. Make sure that it is secured very firmly in place.
    (8) Test that the CELLO is secured on the roof rack by shaking it from side to side. If the CELLO does not appear to be firmly and securely mounted on the roof rack, remove it and put it inside the automobile.

    b. Transporting the CELLO Inside of an Automobile

The CELLO can be easily packed inside trucks, vans, SUVs, etc. The CELLO can also be loaded into the backseat of most station wagons and 4 door sedans.
    (1) Remove the top-cover and fold up the side-panels.
    (2) Lay a blanket on the backseat to protect the upholstery.
    (3) Roll the CELLO across the backseat of the automobile.
    (4) Make sure both rear doors of the automobile will close.

    c. Packing the CELLO and Bicycle Separately in an Automobile

    (1) If the CELLO will not easily fit inside of the automobile, unload the CELLO and reassemble the bicycle.
    (2) Load the bicycle onto the roof rack or rear rack of the automobile.
    (3) Remove the CELLO side-panels from the BOB trailer. Put the side-panels in the bottom of the BOB trailer. Load the trailer into the trunk of the automobile.
